MAYDAY Recruitment is seeking a highly experienced Technical Underwriter to join a growing and forward-thinking insurance business.

This is a key role for someone who enjoys working on complex risks, influencing underwriting standards, and mentoring others while contributing to smarter, more consistent decision-making across the business.

Main responsibilities include:
  • Assess and make decisions on complex or non-standard risks outside standard underwriting limits
  • Act as a key referral point, providing guidance on difficult or high-value cases
  • Support underwriters with risk selection, pricing considerations and policy structuring
  • Help maintain and improve underwriting guidelines and decision frameworks
  • Ensure consistency and alignment with underwriting standards and risk appetite
  • Work closely with claims, operations and other teams to improve the overall policy lifecycle
  • Contribute to product improvements, including wording clarity and coverage enhancements
  • Coach and mentor underwriters to strengthen technical capability and confidence
  • Identify areas to streamline processes and improve efficiency

The ideal candidate:
  • 8+ years’ experience in underwriting, including complex or non-standard risks, ideally within SME or Commercial Motor Underwriting
  • Strong technical knowledge across underwriting, pricing and policy structures
  • Experience supporting or mentoring other underwriters
  • A solid understanding of underwriting governance and best practices
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence and guide stakeholders
  • A structured and analytical approach to decision-making
  • Experience working with underwriting guidelines, frameworks or referral processes
  • A proactive mindset with a focus on continuous improvement
  • Relevant insurance qualifications (preferred but not essential)
